How did Valentines Day start?

The history of Valentine’s Day is extremely interesting. The history is drenched both with the essence of the Christian tradition as well as the mysteries of ancient Rome. According to the catholic tradition there are three different saints by the name Valentine. All these saints were martyred for their heroism and therefore they are remembered by people from across the globe.

According to the popular legend, there had been a young priest named Valentine who lived in the third century. Rome at that time had different emperors and all of them were whimsical in their own ways. One such emperor was Claudius II, who thought that young soldiers serve better if they are not married. Therefore he used to force young people into the field of artillery. He also issued an order that all these young men should not marry. Therefore any priest who is seen to perform the act of marrying any of these young soldiers would be put to death.

Valentine was a rational human being and saw the irrational aspect of the king’s order. Therefore he used to get these young people married off secretly. But Emperor Claudius got to know this and beheaded this priest. He is still remembered because he stood by the thousands of lovers who wait to be united.
