What are known as blood diamonds? And why?

Blood Diamonds are also called conflict diamonds; these are diamonds sold to provide funds to the illicit operations of any rebel or military group. Blood diamonds are sometimes sold to help the terrorist activists to continue with their terrorist activities. Most of the African countries such as Liberia, Sierra Leone, Angola, and the Democratic Republic of Congo are the worst affected countries that face possible threats from the acquisition of blood diamonds. In all these countries citizens have been intimidated, mutilated and in some cases simply killed by the rebel groups to have possession of the local diamond trade.

Though presently wars in these vulnerable areas have almost ceased, but blood diamonds from the Ivory Coast in West Africa, and Liberia are still rampant. However, in these areas, the trade is running with the label of conflict-free diamonds; bloodsheds do occur in the process.

In order to stop this illegal trading of diamond, in the year 2000, South African countries began a campaign to track the origins of all rough diamonds. Basically, in this campaign, an attempt was taken to put a stop to the selling of blood diamond from the known conflict areas. The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS) came into being to put a curb on the sale of blood diamonds.
